The Retiree's Choice

Ideal for retirees, sabbatical-takers, and high-net-worth individuals living off passive income. Work in Spain is not permitted.

  • Who Is It For: Retirees (pension), career-break individuals, passive-income earners (dividends, interest, rent)
  • Main Applicant Income: €28,800 annually
  • Per Additional Member: +€7,200 annually
  • Proof Required: Bank statements covering 6–12 months (no sudden large deposits)

Digital Nomad Visa

Spain's Remote Worker Visa

For remote employees of foreign companies and freelancers whose clients are based outside Spain.

  • Remote Capable: Job must be 100% remotely performable
  • Employer Age: Must have existed at least 1 year
  • Contract Duration: Minimum 3 months pre-application
  • Income Requirement: ~€3,024/month (2026 estimate)
  • Qualification: University degree OR 3 years documented experience

For employees: the foreign company must provide a remote work authorisation letter and proof of social security compliance. For freelancers: multiple clients are permitted, provided at least 80% of income originates outside Spain.

Portugal Residency Permits

Lisbon, Portugal

Work / Employment Visa D1

For foreigners with employment contracts or business activity in Portugal. Includes the EU Blue Card sub-category for highly skilled professionals. Initial permit valid for 2 years, renewable.

Passive Income Visa D7

The "Retiree Visa" for those with independent income sources (pensions, rentals, investments). Requires stable passive income exceeding €11,040 annually (plus adjustments per family member). Initial permits typically span 2 years, renewable. After 5 years: permanent residency or citizenship eligibility.

Digital Nomad Visa D8

Established October 2022 for remote workers and freelancers. Requires approximately €3,040–€3,480 net monthly (four times minimum wage). Available as a 1-year temporary stay visa (extendable) or standard residence permit up to 5 years. After 5 years: permanent residence or citizenship pathway.
